iPad iBooks

Two sides to the story.

Download the iBooks app free from the App Store. More than a great ebook reader, it’s also an amazing place to browse and shop for books day or night. Tap the iBooks icon and your bookshelf appears. Tap the Store button and the bookshelf flips around like a secret passageway to reveal the iBookstore, where you can browse tens of thousands of books — many of them free. Browse by title, author, or genre. View what’s featured on the iBookstore, the New York Times best-seller lists, and more. When you find a book you like, tap it to see more details, peruse reviews, even read a sample. Download the book and it appears on your bookshelf, ready to read. Books you download will also be available for your iPhone and iPod touch, so you’ll never be without your favorite reads.

iBooks

Get the free iBooks app and start reading books on your iPad today.

Grow your library.

You’ll find tens of thousands of titles on the iBookstore, and more arrive every day. The iBooks app uses the ePub format — the most popular open book format in the world. Its universal structure makes it easy for publishers to create iBooks versions of your favorite reads. And you can find free ePub titles using your Mac or PC and sync them to the iBooks app on your iPad with iTunes.

All your PDFs. Right where you want them.

The iBooks app now works with your PDF documents — user guides, business proposals, project plans, and more. You add PDFs to iBooks in two ways: select a PDF from an email message on your iPad and open it in the iBooks app, where it appears on your bookshelf. Or add a PDF to your iTunes library on your Mac or PC and sync it to your iPad. In iBooks, you can tap a button to switch between viewing your iBooks titles and PDFs. Tap a PDF to read it and it fills the screen just like an ebook. You can swipe through pages, add bookmarks, or zoom in for a closer look.

It’s a great read.

Reading on iPad is just like reading a book. You hold your iPad like a book. You flip the pages like a book. And you do it all with your hands — just like a book. The high-resolution, LED-backlit screen displays each page beautifully. Turn iPad to the portrait orientation to view a single page. Or view two pages at once by rotating it to landscape. Move forward or backward by tapping the right or left side of the screen. Or turn a page slowly by dragging from right to left. Jump to a different section of the book entirely by visiting the table of contents and selecting a chapter. Touch and hold any word to look it up in the built-in dictionary or Wikipedia, or to search for it throughout the book and on the web. Even with all these extras, reading is so natural on iPad, the technology seems to disappear.

The plot thickens.

iBooks now features Enhanced Books — where words, pictures, audio, and video come together on a single page. Packed with rich and relevant digital content, Enhanced Books expand the experience of reading a book. Listen to an author read a favorite passage, watch supplementary video, or flick through a library of photos or unpublished excerpts. Whether you’re looking for depth or a diversion, a little bit of context or a lot more clarity — Enhanced Books get you closer to the inside story.

Personalize your reading experience.

Unlike a paper book — or ebooks on other devices — you can tailor iBooks to suit the way you read. Turn iPad to the portrait orientation to view a single page. Or view two pages at once by rotating it to landscape. Change the text size or even the font. Touch and hold any word to look it up in the built-in dictionary or Wikipedia, or to search for it throughout the book and on the web. iBooks also works with VoiceOver, the screen reader in iPad, so it can read you the contents of any page. Yet even with all these extras, reading is so natural on iPad, the technology seems to disappear.

Always find your place.

With iBooks, you can jump to any chapter right from the table of contents. If you read something especially interesting or inspiring, use the Bookmarking feature to highlight the text and make notes — perfect for students. And when you take a break from reading, iBooks automatically saves your place across all your devices. So you can start reading a book on your iPad and pick up where you left off on your iPhone or iPod touch, without having to plug into a computer.

iPad Accessibility

Built-in accessibility.

iPad comes with a screen reader, support for playback of closed-captioned content, and other innovative universal access features — right out of the box. There’s no additional software to buy or install. These features make iPad easier to use for people who have a vision impairment, are deaf or hard of hearing, or have a physical or learning disability.

VoiceOver

Like iPhone and iPod touch, iPad includes VoiceOver, the world’s first gesture-based screen reader for the blind. Instead of memorizing keyboard commands or pressing tiny arrow keys, you simply touch the screen to hear a description of the item under your finger, then double-tap, drag, or flick to control iPad. VoiceOver speaks 21 languages and works with all of the applications built into iPad. Apple also enables software developers to create applications for iPad that work with VoiceOver.

Mono Audio

If your hearing is limited in one ear, tap a checkbox to route both right- and left-channel audio into both headphones, so you can hear both channels in either ear.

Zoom

Zoom on iPad lets you magnify the entire screen of any application. Zoom up to five times the normal size and move left, right, up, and down to view any portion of the screen close up. Zoom works everywhere, including the Home, Unlock, and Spotlight screens, and with every application, including those you purchase from the App Store.

Closed Captioning

Every iPad can display subtitles and closed captioning for the deaf and hard of hearing when playing movies and podcasts that support it. Movies and podcasts with closed captioning are available on the iTunes Store and can be downloaded directly to iPad or synced to iPad using iTunes.

White on Black

If you want higher contrast, iPad lets you change the display to white on black. Use the White on Black feature in any application, as well as the Home, Unlock, and Spotlight screens, and with Zoom and VoiceOver.

Triple-click Home

If you only use the VoiceOver, White on Black, or Zoom features occasionally, or simply want a fast way to turn them on and off, enable the Triple-click Home feature. Then triple-click the Home button to turn VoiceOver, Zoom, or White on Black on or off instantly. Can’t decide which one to use? Set Triple-click Home to “ask” and it will display a list of your options so you can choose the right one when you need it.

iPad Spotlight Search

Search far and wide.

When you’re looking for something specific on your iPad, you’ll find it fast with Spotlight Search. Flick to the right on the main Home screen to open Spotlight, type in a keyword, and search your iPad. Tap any result to go directly to a contact, play a song, open a calendar event, and more.

Search inside apps.

Spotlight is also available inside many apps. Search names in Contacts; subject, sender, and recipient in Mail; and calendar events by subject, location, or attendees. Search all text in Notes. And search for albums, artists, or song titles in the iPod app. If the contact or email message you’re looking for isn’t on your iPad, you can continue your search on the server.* Search responds with all the results so you can display them on your iPad.

iPad Home Screen

Make it just how you like it.

The Home screen is where you start on iPad. It’s where you’ll find all your applications. It’s where you go to switch between them by pressing the Home button. And you can make it all your own. Customize your Home screen by adding your favorite apps and websites. If you check the same websites every day, create icons that let you access them from your Home screen with a single tap. You can even use one of your favorite photos as the wallpaper. However you customize your Home screen, your iPad will be one of a kind.

Home for all your apps.

The more apps you add to your iPad, the more Home screens you have. Create up to 11 Home screens and browse them with a flick. Arrange the apps on your Home screen however you like — even move them between screens. Organize your Home screens right on iPad. Or organize them in iTunes on your Mac or PC, then sync them back to iPad.

Get back Home.

Access any app easily by pressing the Home button. Press it once to get back to the last Home screen you were on. Press it again to return to your main Home screen.

iPad Contacts

More than just names and numbers.

With iPad, you can do more with your contacts than ever before. Put a photo to a name, so you can find someone at a glance. Add an email address and you can send a message with a tap. Or add birthdays, anniversaries, and important notes to any contact. You can even set a reminder that’s saved to your calendar.

Find everyone and anyone.

Scroll through Contacts with a flick of your finger. Or use built-in search to find a name fast. You can even group contacts (for example, “colleagues” or “book club”). Turn iPad to landscape and you see your complete contacts list and a single contact simultaneously. Need directions? Tap an address inside a contact and iPad automatically opens Maps.

All your contacts. Everywhere you are.

iTunes makes sure all your contacts are up to date, everywhere you check them. Connect your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to your computer, and iTunes can sync every contact you have, so every address book you use is a perfect match. Or use MobileMe. It syncs your contacts automatically on all your devices— no docking required.*

MobileMe on iPad.

MobileMe keeps your contacts (along with your email, calendars, and Safari bookmarks) in sync on your iPad, iPhone, Mac, and PC — wirelessly and automatically. So no matter where you go, you’ll always have the most up-to-date information at hand. Learn more

iPAD Calendar

How’s your schedule look? Absolutely great.

Calendar on iPad keeps your busy life beautifully organized. View your calendar by day, week, or month. See everything in a list. iPad changes views with a tap or a turn. In portrait view, you can see an entire month or the details of a single day. Rotate iPad to landscape, and you’ll find a list of the day’s activities on one side and your detailed schedule on the other. iPad makes it easy to focus on what you’re doing now, even while you plan for what’s next.

Mix business with pleasure.

Create calendars for different schedules so you’ll never miss a lunch date, soccer game, or important meeting. Tap the plus sign to add an event, then assign the event to a calendar. Each calendar appears in a different color, so it’s easy to manage them all. And you can see all your calendars at once.

Everything comes together.

You have an iPad, a computer, and an iPhone or iPod touch. How do you keep all your calendars straight? It’s easy in iTunes. Connect your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to your computer, and iTunes can sync every meeting, event, birthday, appointment, and reminder in every calendar application you use: iCal, MobileMe, Google, Microsoft Outlook, AOL, and more. MobileMe syncs your calendars automatically on all your devices— no docking required.*

iPad Notes

Collect your thoughts.

Use the Notes app to jot down anything and everything and take it with you wherever you go. iPad is so thin and light, you can take it to a meeting, a lecture, even the grocery store. The iPad display gives you plenty of space to fill with your notes and to-do lists.

A noteworthy keyboard.

The large onscreen keyboard makes it easy to write notes quickly. Text is crisp, bright, and readable. The iPad keyboard even accelerates your typing by tracking what you write and suggesting words, correcting spelling, and inserting punctuation for you automatically. And iPad apps are made to work together. So if you need to check a phone number in Contacts or find an address in Maps while you write, Notes remembers where you left off.

Get it all down.

In portrait view, iPad is one big note-taking page. In landscape view, a clean sheet is ready and waiting, along with a list of all your notes. With a tap, you can add, delete, or flip through your notes. iPad circles the current note in red, so you can see where you are at a glance. Need a reminder? Make a note, then email it to yourself or others. And you can sync your notes to your Mac or PC through iTunes.

iPad Maps

Change your view.

Finding your way is a completely new experience on iPad. Tap to view locations from above with high-resolution satellite imagery, up close with street view, by topography with a new terrain view, and in map view — all using Google services. Drag your finger up to lift the corner of the map, and you can switch between views. iPad with Wi-Fi finds your location using known Wi-Fi hotspots, and Wi-Fi + 3G models use Wi-Fi, GPS, and cellular towers. So you can get routes, get directions, and get there in no time.

It’s like you’re standing on the street.

Visit your location before you arrive with street view. Tap to see a street-level image of where you’re headed, along with driving or walking directions. Zoom in on the image and you’ll feel like you’re right in front of it. Zoom out to explore the neighborhood.

You can definitely get there from here.

Find the best route to your house and email it to a friend. Find the perfect sushi spot and bookmark it for later — or add it to your contacts list. The apps on iPad work together, so you can keep track of everything in your world.
